"Blackadder" went through my mind after I went off-line.

Looking at Charlie's interpretation does make a lot of sense  ....  but what worries me is the D2 assignment of this puzzle.  It just does not seem likely that someone is going to sit down with pencil and paper, convert all the letters to binary, XOR the pairs and then translate the result back to ASCII Roman letters, and yet, that's what you'd have to do if you did not have the opportunity to program.

I would also be thinking that being able to apply some other logic operator to derive another 5 letters from the cyphertext would be rather coincidental, not of course that it just might occur.
