So what about just plain  "adder"?

I've searched for a snake species with 6 letters, 3 of which are x,o,and r;  so far no luck.  For example, the word "flexor" works, except that it's not a snake.  And, as I said before, snakes are fun, so "flexor" can't be the right answer.

But I did find the Desert Mountain Adder, (Bitis xeropaga);
xor is only 3/8 of the species name, but it's close.
