Fruity math (Posted on 2003-02-17) Difficulty: 3 of 5
Using only the digits 0-9, but not 3 or 5, solve for each letter:

GRAPE - PLUM = APPLE

You can only use one digit for each letter.

Solution re(2): A solution - THE solution | Comment 3 of 15 |
(In reply to re: A solution by Ravi Raja)

I think that my original solution (based on the assumption that P>U and A>L) is unique. Since the other possible combinations of relationships all yield non-valid results, as follows...

M=0, G=A+1 and P>R are known for all solutions

1. Assume P>U and A<L, this gives the 3 equations:
P-U=L, 10+A-L=P, R+9-P=P which can be solved to show A+U=6
Therefore A=2 or A=4, which gives G=3 or G=5 which are both non-valid.

2. Assume U>P and A>L, this gives the 3 equations:
10+P-U=L, A-1-L=P, R+10-P=P which can be solved to give A+U>22, but this is non-valid since A+U<18

3. Assume U>P and A<L, this gives the 3 equations:
10+P-U=L, 9+A-L=P, R+9-P=P which can be solved to give A=P=8
Another non-valid option

Therefore the only valid option is P>U and A>L and the only solution for that is as in my first comment.
