Why do you think manholes are round in shape?

I don't think it would be possible to fit a triangular cover through in a method you describe, since the hole will always be slightly narrower than the cover so that the cover can rest on it when closed.
I do agree with the argument about being harder for a man to climb through.
But actually, i think that the lack of need to orient the cover properly in order to close it is the most compelling argument I have heard. (It's actually one that not many people come up with.)
