Standing for higher powers (Posted on 2005-12-31) Difficulty: 2 of 5
Kings and lords and Christians raised them
Since they stand for higher powers
Yet few of them would stand, I'm certain,
If women ruled this world of ours.

Could this be referring to the Rooks in a game of chess?  It's a sketchy guess at best, but Kings, lords (knights?) and Christians (bishops?) are all chess pieces, who have raised the rooks (or castles) to help defend the King.

However, if "this world of ours" (i.e. the chess board) were ruled by women (Queens), few of the rooks would stand (as Queens are much more powerful pieces than rooks).
