Two Armies (Posted on 2006-02-23) Difficulty: 1 of 5
Upon the ruby studded ground
Men faced each other, fat and round
Each one standing, all like drones
Never to touch the precious stones
They march toward each other through the plains
A battle ensues and one remains
One man marches through the dead
And places a crown upon his head
Soon, only one army is left alive

I ask you, what is being described?

My guess... | Comment 13 of 17 |
Most of the people are guessing checkers... but the thing about checkers is that usually "fat and round" do not really describe checker pieces, and the "precious stones" are a bit out of point. "Ruby studded ground" also does not fit the description of checkers. It could be the solution, but these words seem not to fit. The crown's a good indicator of it though.

Is it possible for this to be pool? After all, the balls are red, hence the ruby thing, the felt is green, possibly explaining the plains. The balls are certainly relatively round. The "precious stones" could be the black ball and the opposing team's balls. "One army is left alive" may describe the appearance of all of a player's balls being cleared when he wins. The man marching through the dead might be the black ball going down the hole, placing a crown (victory) upon the head of the PLAYER. The only strange part about this guess is the fact that the "live" team is in fact the losing team. But this is just a guess.
