I have a cross in the form of one square with four identical squares surrounding it

|_|_|_|
  |_|
Cut it into the fewest number of pieces possible such that, when rearranged the pieces form two smaller crosses of identical size.

  __|_| |_|__     The cross may be cut into 4 sections.  
 |__|_| |_|__|    (The number of cuts performed depends 
  __  _  _ __      on what constitutes a cut.) One cross may  
 |__|_| |_|__|    be formed by overlaying the middle square
      |_| |_|        of A with that of D. An identical cross may
 C               D   also be formed from B and C.
