Changing With the Times (Posted on 2006-03-16) Difficulty: 2 of 5
"I am a food upon your plate,
When you partake of me in dawning light.
Yet I become a drink inside your glass,
After dinner time at night."

Note: One word fits both clues

I guessed "toast", and while I understand your reasoning for why you think it's incorrect, these types of riddles can't be taken that literally.  They never seem to fit quite exactly, but that's the point and the beauty of it, to get across an idea metaphorically and poetically.

For example, if I wanted to write a more literal riddle that takes advantage of the double meaning of "toast", it might go something like this:

"I am a food upon your plate
When you partake of me in dawning light
Yet I can also mean a gesture in which you raise your glass in tribute and optionally give a short speech
After dinner time at night."

That of course would make it much too easy and much less fun.  While I agree that "toast" doesn't specifcally refer to the liquid in the glass, I stand by my answer anyway. :)
