An Occupied And Vacant Squares Problem (Posted on 2006-03-19) Difficulty: 2 of 5
Place 4 Kings, 4 Rooks, 2 Knights, and 1 Bishop on a conventional (8x8) chessboard in order that every square, whether occupied or vacant, is under attack.

How about placing 6 Kings, 2 Rooks, 2 Knights, and 1 Bishop on the said board, satisfying the same conditions?

SOLUTION TO PART A:

The solution of this problem is as follows :

Kings : R2C3,R2C7,R6C3 and R6C7
Rooks: R2C5,R4C1,R4C7 and R8C5
Knights: R3C3 and R6C6
Bishop: R4C5

where R denotes the Rows and C denotes the columns.


SOLUTION TO PART B:

The solution of this problem is as follows.

Kings : R2C3,R2C5,R2C7,R4C7,R6C3 and R6C7
Rooks: R4C1 and R8C5
Knights: R3C3 and R6C6
Bishop: R4C5

where R denotes the Rows and C denotes the columns.
