Who is Elizabeth's Partner (Posted on 2006-04-04) Difficulty: 4 of 5
Five couples went for a dance together. The names and surnames of neither boys nor girls started with the same letter. The list of names & surnames of boys and girls are given below.

Boys
Names – Arnold, Brad, Chris, Dennis, Elvis
Surnames – Aniston, Baker, Campbell, Davis, Edwards

Girls
Names – Angelina, Betty, Catherine, Diana, Elizabeth
Surnames – Austin, Burton, Carrey, Dean, Everts

The following things are known

Clue 1- Brad Aniston is neither going around with Ms Burton nor Catherine
Clue 2- Angelina Dean is neither going around with Mr Baker nor Chris
Clue 3- There are "two boys" whose name and their fiancée's surname start with the same letter. One is Chris, but the other is neither Arnold nor Mr. Baker.
Clue 4- There are two girls (who are not paired with either of the "two boys" referred in clue (3)) whose name and their fiancé's surname start with the same letter. One of them is Angelina but the other is neither Catherine nor Ms Everts.

Who is Elizabeth's Partner?

I followed you and agree up to
" and thus Dennis is Ms. Austin's finacee"
We definately can match all the Male names with Female Surnames with no problem.

However..  You try out Chris=Edwards, decide that doesn't work, so deduce Chris=Davis.
We know Chris cant = Anniston or Campbell.. but why not Baker ?
How are you ruling out Chris Baker.

Also, one more thing.
I dont think you can infer Catherine cant equal Everts from clue 4.
Likewise, I don't think you can deduce Arnold can't be Baker from clue 3.
I think we have to consider the possibility that in both cases, the narrator could be telling us the same fact, two different ways.

Edit...  Okay..
Also.. I guess therefore from Clues 1 and 2.. you're also assuming  Chris cant = Baker and
         Catherine cant = Burton

Well.. that helps me follow you a little more... but still...
These could be tricks thown in...

For all these...   Just cuz we're told
x doesnt = A
and
x doesnt = B
that doesnt mean
 A doesnt = B
