Garden Path (Posted on 2006-05-10) Difficulty: 3 of 5
A gardener has a rectangular garden 11m (AD) by 29m (AB) and wants to install a diagonal path exactly 1m wide. The edges of the path are ED and BF as shown in the diagram.

Find the exact area of the path. (Note: EB is not the width of the path.)

The area of the rectangle is 11 * 29 = 319.

The area of each triangle which is NOT part of the path is 0.5 * 11 * 28.  Collectively, therefore, the two triangles' area sum to 11 * 28 = 308.

By subtraction, that would give the path an area of 11 square meters.

I'll now read other comments to doublecheck myself.
