If thats not the answer it could be. Mind was the other word i thought of but only after i read the hint that the answer was 4 letters. I really wasnt sure how literally to interpret the lines. first time ive attempted one of these riddles you see. First i thought of contradiction ie: something that is everything and nothing or possibily one or possibly the other. Its nature is not black or white but POSSIBLY black or white.

Having said all that the word IDEA springs to mind.
Curious to see the answer.
