An Apples And Boxes Puzzle (Posted on 2007-02-20) Difficulty: 2 of 5
A certain number of apples are kept in five boxes; Box 1, Box 2, Box 3, Box 4, Box 5 such that:

(i) The number of apples in Box 3 is one-sixth of the total apples in Box 5.
(ii) Box 2 has twice as many apples as Boxes 3 and 5 combined.
(iii) Box 1 has half as many apples as Box 5
(iv)Box 4 has 10 more apples than Box 1.
(v) Box 4 has 1/4 as many apples as Box 2.

Determine which boxes contain how many apples and the total number of apples in all the five boxes.

Box 3 is holding 20 apples.

Box 1 is holding 40 apples and box 3.

Box 4 is holding 10 apples and boxes 1 and 3.

Box 5 is holding 50 apples and boxes 1, 3 and 4.

Box 2 is holding 160 apples and boxes 1, 3, 4 and 5.

Total number of apples = 280.
