I met a man with seven wives.

Each wife had seven sacks;

Each sack had seven cats;

Each cat had seven kits.

Kits, cats, sacks, wives;

How many were going to St. Ives?

consider the following | Comment 32 of 43 |
nowhere in the riddle does it say that the man, wives, sacks, cats, or kits were going to St. Ives.  So technically the answer could be zero.  The person stating this riddle may have been going one direction and met the man who was on his way home from St Ives.  They could have been going opposite directions.
