While on my way to St. Ives,

I met a man with seven wives.

Each wife had seven sacks;

Each sack had seven cats;

Each cat had seven kits.

Kits, cats, sacks, wives;

How many were going to St. Ives?

Only one person (that is ME) was going so St. Ives, which becomes obvious from the meaning of the word "MET".
(You meet someone when you both are travelling in opposite directions. So when I was going to St. Ives, everyone whom I met were coming from the opposite direction, that is from St. Ives and so were not going there).
