My guess would be "IT".
It is only given in the problem that the word starts with the ninth and ends with the twentieth, and so, the total number of letters in the word must be precisely two.
Now, the ninth letter of the alphabet is "I" while the twentieth letter of the alphabet is "T", giving "IT" as the required solution to the riddle.
