All Wrong at the Olympic Games (Posted on 2007-06-15) Difficulty: 3 of 5
In the marathon, all the competing countries were from Africa, but not the usual runners, and maybe that caused all prognostics on the race results to be wrong:

1) Algeria will not win the gold, nor Botswana the silver.
2) Chad will win a medal, and Djibouti will not.
3) Djibouti and Egypt will both win medals.
4) Djibouti will not win the silver, nor Egypt the bronze.
5) Algeria will win a medal, and Chad will not.

Who won which of the medals?

From Clues 1 & 4, we know one of these four possibilities is true:

1) A = Gold

2) B = Silver

3) D = Silver

4) E = Bronze

Starting with the first, if A = Gold (Condition 1), then C also wins a medal (Clue 5).  Thus D wins a medal as well (Clue 2).  E does not win a medal, satisfying Clue 3.  This means D = Silver (Clue 4), leaving C=Bronze.  Note that this also satisfies Condition 3 above.

Next, consider B = Silver (Condition 2).  This means E = Bronze (Clue 4) satisfying Condition 4 above, which means D does not win a medal (Clue 3).  This leaves A & C, one winning Gold and the other not winning a medal.  By Clue 5, the only way possible is for C = Gold and A winning none.  This corresponds with Clue 1.  However, it makes Clue 2 a true statement since C = Gold and D = none.  Therefore, this arrangement is not valid.

The results are as follows:

Gold = Algeria

Silver = Djibouti

Bronze = Chad
