Simplifying that shows the actual behavior of the sequence.
x, 4x, 4x+4, x+1, x-3, 4x-12, 4x-8, x-2, x-6, 4x-24, 4x-20, x-5,
Taking every fourth term:
x, x-3, x-6,
4x, 4x-12, 4x-24,
4x+4, 4x-8, 4x-20,
x+1, x-2, x-5,
Every x term gets less by 3, and every 4x term gets less by 4(3) or 12.
