Dare to harm me, I'll make you cry.

Cut short my life and before end of day,

Your family and friends: I'll make them pay.

Pure white my heart, brown is my dress.

Just who am I? Bet you can't guess.

Explanation (pretty straightforward):

Title: An onion can be separated into many layers.

Line 1: The edible part grows underground.

Line 2: Cutting into an onion causes tearing.

Line 3-4: Eating onions can cause bad breath and flatulence.

Line 5: The most common varieties are these colours.
