Construct a right triangle of area 8 out of three other right triangles with areas 1, 3 and 4.

There are many ways to do this (see the comments), and the solution I have is precisely Charlie´s solution.

Take an isosceles right angled triangle of area 8. Find the midpoint (M) of one of the sides and draw lines from (M) to the opposite corner, and to the hypothenuse, meeting it at right angle. This divides the original triangle in three right angled triangles: one with sides 4 and 2, so area 4; one isosceles with hypothenuse 2, so area 1; and the remaining one must have area 3.
