Boxed in boxes (Posted on 2009-01-26) Difficulty: 1 of 5
Anne has boxes in three sizes: large, medium, and small.

She puts 11 large boxes on a table. She leaves some of these boxes empty, and in each of the other boxes she puts 8 medium boxes. She leaves some of these medium boxes empty, and in each of the other medium boxes she puts 8 (empty) small boxes. Now, 102 of all the boxes on the table are empty.

How many boxes has Anne used in total?

Each time Anne puts 8 boxes in a box, the total number of empty boxes increases by 8 - 1 = 7.

Let us assume that 8 boxes have been put in a box precisely n times.

Tehn, we must have 7*n + 11 = 102, giving: n=13, so that Anne used a total of (8*13 + 11) = 115 boxes.
