XXXVIII (Posted on 2009-07-24) Difficulty: 3 of 5
Using modern standard subtractive notation (i.e. IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XLIX = 49, XC = 90, etc.) there is something quite significant about the Roman number XXXVIII (38). What is it?

XXXVIII would be the last entry on an alphabetical list of Roman numerals.

Perhaps a case could be made for XXXVIII being the longest Roman number which could be represented on a suitably enhanced digital clock designed to represent any time (hours, minutes, seconds)in its Arabic numeral form. (Don't ask me -- all I know is what I read in the papers...)
