Foreign Puppy (Posted on 2003-10-31) Difficulty: 3 of 5
A man wishes to sell a puppy for $11. A customer wants to buy it but only has foreign currency. The exchange rate for the foreign currency is 11 round coins = $15, 11 square coins = $16, 11 triangular coins = $17.

How many of each coinage should the customer pay?

Solution No kitten would be that cheap !! | Comment 5 of 9 |
How many of each coinage should the customer pay? He should pay x round coins, y square coins, and z triangular coins. (Wasn't that easy?) Each round coin is 15/11 of a dollar. Each square coin is 16/11 of a dollar. Each triangular coin is 17/11 of a dollar.

15x/11 + 16y/11 + 17z/11 = 11.

15x + 16y + 17z = 121

x=7 y=1 z=0

He should pay 7 round coins and 1 square coin.
