Non-Attacking Chess Pieces II (Posted on 2010-08-23) Difficulty: 2 of 5
Arrange all sixteen white pieces and the black king on a standard 8x8 chessboard such that no piece is in check by another piece. The arrangement must be possible to reach following rules of standard play (though such play would be ludicrous), with no pawn having reached the eighth row for promotion.

You are right that the term check is incorrect. The proper term in reference to the pieces of the same color is undefended or en prise.

Please substitute the following for the first sentence of the puzzle text: "Arrange all sixteen white pieces and the black king on a standard 8x8 chessboard such that each piece is undefended and not in a position of immediate capture."

Though the term piece can mean a minor piece (bishop or knight), or a minor or major piece (bishop, knight, rook or queen), it can also mean any chess piece including pawns. It is this latter definition that is being used for this puzzle.

The only black piece on the board is the King.

There may be more than one solution to the puzzle.
