Chime spacing. (Posted on 2011-05-12) Difficulty: 1 of 5
A clock tower has a bell that rings out every hour of the day. (3 chimes at 3 o'clock P.M., etc.) These hourly tolls are spaced 1.5 seconds apart. The clock also chimes once at each half hour.

What is the overall average number of minutes between chimes?

Per hour, there is one half-hour and average of 6.5 hour chimes. (6.5 is the average of 1 and 12, 2 and 11, and so on.)

Thus, 7.5 chimes in an hour = 1 chime every 8 minutes average.
