Take away one of the letters below to leave "a chart".

                   HCART

I was wondering if it had anything to do with an optometrist testing eyes for visual alignment re curves, diagonals, etc. None of the charts I saw on-line seemed to contain 4 letters that fitted any such chart.

I do like the thought of Stad when I consider the pronunciation as:
  8ch art,
the two words do run together.
