Express each of max(x,y) and min(x,y) in terms of abs function.

What are the definitions of max(x,y), min(x,y) and the abs function?  I do not recognize these functions outside of a programming context.  You might have assumed that these functions are the same in all programming languages, but there is no guarantee of that.  Assuming the abs function is the absolute value function, it is the only one I recognize that would have an unambiguous general definition.
