Center to center (Posted on 2012-10-10) Difficulty: 3 of 5
In a pxq rectangle one diagonal is drawn and circles are inscribed in both triangles thus created.

1. Find the distance between the centers of those two circles.
2. What is this distance for (p,q)=(15,8)?

The distance is

   d = sqrt( [p - 2r]^2 + [q - 2r]^2 )

where

   r = pq/t

and

   t = p + q + sqrt( p^2 + q^2 )

For (p,q) = (15,8),

   t = 40

   r = 3

   d ~= 9.22
