Draw a square. Divide it into four identical squares. Remove the bottom left hand square. Now divide the resulting shape into four identical shapes.

Shrink each length of the L shape by a factor of 2 keeping the same "L" shape.  The volume is 1/4 of the original "L".  Center the "inside corner" of the shrunken "L" over the "inside corner" of the full sized "L" without any rotation.

The other 3 shrunken "L"s fit in nicely.  In fact the original grid marks from when the square was divided into 4 smaller squares provide a guide as to where to place the other 3 small "L"s
