Word Meld 1 (Posted on 2003-06-06) Difficulty: 3 of 5
In a word meld, you are given one word to try to change into another, one step at a time. Each step consists of changing one letter of the word into another while still having a true English word. For example, one step would be to change the word "PIE" to "PIT." Another step could change "PIT" to "POT," and so on.

What is the fewest number of steps in which you can change "LONE" to "WOLF"?
L O N E
. . . .
. . . .
W O L F
(I did it in 6 steps)

Solution 5 steps | Comment 22 of 23 |

A wold is a tract of open rolling country (especially upland).

LONE, BONE, BOLE, BOLD, WOLD, WOLF
LONE, CONE, COLE, COLD, WOLD, WOLF
LONE, HONE, HOLE, HOLD, WOLD, WOLF
LONE, TONE, TOLE, TOLD, WOLD, WOLF
LONE, SONE, SOLE, SOLD, WOLD, WOLF

All the above words are considered common words but may not be in the vocabulary of some individuals.  Some of these words that may not be are as follows: a bole is the main stem of a tree; cole is a coarse, curly-leafed cabbage; tole is enameled or lacquered metalware; and sone is a unit of perceived loudness.
