Cross out six letters so that the remaining letters, without altering their sequence will spell a familiar English word:

I removed the bolding from the letters S I X L E T T E R S,

and underlined the letters that remain.

Bringing the remaining letters together gives the solution:


BANANA

(The trick is that we are not crossing out 6 letters, but the letters in the phrase "six letters.")
