Capital City Conclusion (Posted on 2014-03-06) Difficulty: 3 of 5
In the alphametic: ABC+DEF= 495, the letters A to F denotes a different digit in {1,2,3,6,7,8}.

What are :
6 * 8 * 1 * 2 * * and 8 1 * 6 2 * * 1, when each of them denotes the capital city of a country? Each asterisk denotes a letter (whether same or different) that is not included in the alphametic.

Well, the alphametic is "solved" easily enough:
     A & D must be 1 and 3 (in some order)
Then C & F must be 7 and 8 (in some order)
Leaving B & E to be 2 and 6 (in some order)

Consider 81*62**1
8 must be C or F
1 must be A or D
So 81 must be CA or CD or FA or FD
Clearly, 1 = A

So the capitol is either
CA*62**A or FA*62**A
Consulting an atlas leads directly to CANBERRA, Australia as the solution

Then the alphametic can only be
  168
  327
  ---
  495

Then the other capitol is B*C*A*E**
It can only be BUCHAREST, Romania
