Time is an illusion (Posted on 2002-05-29) Difficulty: 4 of 5
Two people are talking long distance on the phone. One is in an East-Coast state of the US, the other is in a West-Coast state of the US. The first asks the other

"What time is it over there?"

Upon hearing the answer, the person says,

"That's funny. It's the same time here!".

How can this be?

Solution What year is it? | Comment 17 of 20 |

Florida is an East-Coast state where ten of its northwestern counties – Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Holmes, Washington, Bay, Jackson, Calhoun, and Gulf (panhandle) – observe Central Time (GMT -06:00). This has been observed since circa 1883.

Oregon is a West-Coast state where the northern 4/5 of Malheur County, its southwestern county, because of its economic relationship with Idaho, observes Mountain Standard Time (GMT -07:00). This has been observed since circa 1955.

During the “repeated” portion of the 1 a.m. hour, in which the Daylight Savings Time in Autumn “falls back”, these two areas have the same time.

As laws are subject to change in areas that can affect state borders, time zones, and observances of Daylight Savings Time, the validity of this riddle or its solution can also change.
