Well, without solving the alphametic, we know that the numbers 702546 must be in WORDSHTING. It wasn't too hard to work out that the event was

THE WAR OF THE ROSES

This went from 1455 to 1487,

which seems consistent with IORR - IODR.

So I'm going to guess that IORR - IODR = 1455 - 1487 = -32

Very clever puzzle, Ady. I especially like that WORDS * WORDS leads to SHOOTINGS, which is (as nearly as I can tell) what that war was all about.
