Including the obscure phrase was enough to stymie me.

Without solving the alphametic, I got the second phrase readily enough, but I could make no sense out of ?EAL AND ???OT, even knowing that the 4 questionmarks were VIFD in some order.

I just assumed that there was an error in the puzzle someplace, so I didn't type what I knew into the alphametic and solve it. Bad assumption on my part.
