My problem needs an illustration

I began this thread and somehow could not post my intentions, gremlins. I shall return to it.

Re: My problem needs an illustration

Recall the literary axiom, “A picture is worth a thousand words”?

[Apologies for the length of this, but I think it is necesary.]

Frequently posted problems may enjoy the benefit of some clarification by way of a visual explanation; some form of illustration can add to the aesthetics of the posted problem while for others a graphic may be vital.

Perplexus can offer 3 groupings of illustration:

1. Ascii/keyboard drawings where one needs to know the workings of the PRE tag (simple and all as it is) under HTML ... and .... the tab key must not be used!

2. Images that are either JPG or GIF in format [somewhere in FAQs levik did say that, but that fact may no longer be on site]

3. Graphics that embody a tabular/spreadsheet format.

From these options the user has some choices.

1. Use keyboard strokes to create, eg; hexagon,

          _

/ \
\ _ /

2. For JPG/GIF images the poster has, in my assessment, four options, and these all require using the "Petition Director" link at some time to notify levik of your need to migrate an image to Perplexus. This will mean that he has to know the problems location. This is rather easy as you only need to look at the URL {the internet location) of where your problem is located. The end of that string, in the location bar will read pid="xxxx", and so you will advise, eg, "pid=1000":

  1. Post the problem on Perplexus and then email levik, with your JPG/GIF attached (and the pid number)
  2. Post your problem, but place your image on your own host server (there are many freebie places where you might "park" it) and advise levik
  3. Post our problem, place your image on your own host server, embed an "a href" link to it within your problem, but still notify levik. [A scholar can edit the link to bring up the image, but we still need levik's intervention]
  4. Post your problem, place your image on a host server, notify levik, but you may ask a scholar to provide a temporary link (which levik will change in due course) but we do need the full URL, eg: http://members.perplexus.com/sally/picture.jpg
  5. As a last resort you might find a complying current scholar who is prepared to temporarily host the image on his/her site location if one exists. Oh! You still have to notify levik!

While realising differences in individual's circumstances my preference is for options 3 or 4. That way any scholar can allow all JM's reviewing at that time to get the full "flavour" of the problem; and with levik having been notified, it matters little when he performs the transfer process.

3. Lastly is the XHTML. This is excellent for providing a tabular graphic. There has been some consternation about its use under the version of one browser. Select this link for that discussion.

An XHTML presentation? Check out Travelling Knight (which I know does not suffer the browser noted difficulty).

This format requires a spreadsheet grid, like Excel or Open Office's Calc, which is then rendered to an XHTML text.

You may care to read more about that here.

This is somewhat more difficult than applying the above graphic formats. It requires you emailing a spreadsheet of your intention to a scholar. At this point in time (since Federico has withdrawn) I think I may the only person to offer that service - and be serverely chastised it things go "pear shaped"!

Editing

OHHH! Shock! HORROR!

We have some lovely things on screen some days and suddenly we see a mess; depending on format, some messier than others.

What happened?

Some HTML tags are "sacrosanct"! If those tags are placed within your problem's body text and you edit, things go funny. Usually it is best to leave a note in 'comments' re any alterations needed, especially XHTML's. Like, it's not a big deal, but under review we cannot deal with a 'garbled' offering until we can provide a fix.

OK!

So what have I left out? What questions do I/others need to address?

This is an open thread, let's hear!Recall the literary axiom, “A picture is worth a thousand words”?
