suggestions to rate problem difficulty
I personally have a hard time judging the difficulty of the problems I submit. Might it be a good idea to institute a system in which in order to vote (or perhaps comment) on a problem it would be necessary to rate it's difficulty level and then the difficulty could be determined by an average rather than the submitter trying to guess what they think the difficulty is. I think the Journeyman and Scholars would have a better idea (based on existing problems and other factors)than especially a new submitter. I know there has been discussion as to determining difficulty level. |

Re: suggestions to rate problem difficul
The comment/voting part of Perplexus is vitally important. I would not like to see forced ratings because it may lead to people hesitating to comment/vote. Changes to the difficulty level, like all aspects of a suggested puzzle (including name, category etc) are open to suggestion by journeymen and scholars to highlight errors. If a level is way off (a matter of opinion) the opportunity is there to TD it.
For me, this is enough. |

Re: suggestions to rate problem difficul
One's background influences one's perception of difficulty thus the process will always be quite subjective.
We can really only advise how we perceive things from our own perspective which might be moderated somewhat by what we know of 'standards' on Perplexus, but I am happy to leave things in that department alone. |

Re: suggestions to rate problem difficulty
Thanks. Perhaps if I am really having difficulty with a problem in particular I will ask in the comment/voting notes and if I do not get a response I will assume there is no objection to the level I suggested.
That is a good point about perception of difficulty. Maybe it is to be more of the perception of the submitter than I am making it out to be.
Vernon, I agree I do not want to make the comment/voting too bothersome either. I certainly hope someone would not TD a problem just becaue they believe it should be rated differently though. Yow. |

Re: suggestions to rate problem difficul
I would never TD a problem based on an incorrect Difficulty Level unless it was WAY OFF (3 or 4)- For me the opportunity to do so is enough to support opposing the prevention of having to rate problems in order to comment. Even the my vote would only be one vote. |

Re: suggestions to rate problem difficulty
Not to beat this subject in to the ground, but I really did not think you would TD a problem based on that, or probably anyone for that matter. |

Re: suggestions to rate problem difficul
Difficulty rating of problems is an issue that comes up now and then. I think its safe to say it isn't all that important. Just make your best guess (3 if you can't even do that) and if people see it differently they will suggest it be changed. |

Re: suggestions to rate problem difficul
Just browsing through Forums looking for something and found this thread http://perplexus.info/forum.php?fid=5&tid=753. It links back to a discussion that keeps coming back.
Incidentally, this thread to which I am replying is currently on the same page as the linked one. |
