In a square of side 4, I pack 4 circles of unit radius.
What's the largest circle I can fit into the center (such that it doesn't overlap the other circles)?
Draw a line diagonally through the square so that it passes through the centers of two of the circles. From the center of the circle to the side of the square create a right triangle. Length of the diagonal from the center to the corner is r*(2^.5). Radius of a circle that you can fit in the corner, is then r*(2^.5)-r.
