9 is IX (in Roman Numerals)
4 is IV, and
1 is I

so 6-9 is
SIX - IX = S (Sulfer)

5-4 is
FIVE - IV = Fe (Iron)

9-1 is
NINE - I = N NE (which are Nitrogen and Neon, I believe)
