Soccer balls are usually covered with a design based on regular pentagons and hexagons.

This is true, but not what I was getting at. My point was that the fact that no Johnson solid is composed of pentagons and hexagons doesn't rule out a nonconvex shape made of pentagons and hexagons.
There could even be a surface with holes in it.
This would make an even worse soccer ball.
