Will the real engineer please stand up? (Posted on 2004-05-18) Difficulty: 2 of 5
On a train, Smithe, Robins, and John are the fireman, conductor, and the engineer, but NOT respectively. Also aboard the train are three businessmen who have the same names: a Mr. Smithe, a Mr. Robins, and a Mr. John.

Mr. Robins Lives in New York. The conductor lives exactly halfway between Columbus and New York. Mr. John earns exactly $20,000 per year. The conductor's nearest neighbor, one of the passengers, earns exactly three times as much as the conductor. Smithe beats the fireman in billiards. The passenger whose name is the same as the conductor's lives in Columbus.

Who is the Engineer?

Smithe is the conductor, who lives 1/2 way between Columbus and New York

Robins is the engineer

John is the fireman

Mr. Smithe lives in Columbus

Mr. Robins lives in New York

Mr. John makes $20,000 - but is NOT the one who makes 3 times the conductor's salary

The problem stated that a PASSENGER earns exactly three times as much as the conductor.  It did not specify if it was one of the businessmen.  It did not specify if there were other passengers on the train or not.  It also did not specify if the fireman was a passenger, or if he works on the train
