Riddle of Scorn (Posted on 2004-06-01) Difficulty: 1 of 5
Thousands of us all around you.
We protect you all the time,
Yet you treat us badly...

You burn us in public buildings
to make you seem better;

You try to make us straight,
but most of us refuse usually;

When we are dead, you are pleased.
Yet, when we are gone, you are sad.

What are we?

Trees

Thousands of us all around you. (trees, woods)
We protect you all the time, (air, food, and shelter)
Yet you treat us badly... (burn, chop, degrade the environment)

You burn us in public buildings (fireplaces)
to make you seem better; (warmth)

You try to make us straight, (by braces)
but most of us refuse usually; (chaos theory prohibits perfection)

When we are dead, you are pleased. (wood product, clearing for roads)
Yet, when we are gone, you are sad. (oxygen, recreation)

What are we? (trees)
