A 10x10 square can obviously hold 100 unit circles (diameter=1) when arranged in rows and columns. What is the maximum number of non-overlapping unit circles a 10x10 square can hold if the circles are packed closer together?

Vee-Liem,
You have predicted an answer that someone already displayed, a
not-all-that-impressive accomplishment. What's more, you didn't
justify your prediction with a full solution.
You also expressed your doubt about Thalamus' calculations (pertaining
to the application of the Pythagorean theorem) without giving evidence
supporting your doubt. In fact, his calculations seem to back up
the result, and they seem correct to me (and presumably to others since
no one else commented/corrected him, until you did).
When one submits comments, one can select a "Comment Type" from a drop down list. The bulb indicates that the submitter selected "Full Solution".
It is appreciated if solutions are accompanied by a thoughtful and well
articulated explanation/proof to help others follow the submitter's
line of reasoning.
