Sins of the Gambler (Posted on 2004-08-23) Difficulty: 3 of 5
Can you think of a method of playing standard casino roulette that gives the player a better than 90% chance of winning each time he plays a game?

A game is considered to be at least 10 bets on consecutive spins of the roulette wheel. A game is considered won if the gambler stops with more money than he started. The player starts with $1100 and table limits are min: $1 max: $1000).

A way to do it Comment 6 of 6 |

The gambler should use a strategy where he bets $1 after a win and twice the previous bet plus one after he loses.  On the tenth bet, he should bet at least enough to make $1101 if he wins, if he can.

A quick spreadseet calculation for 9/19 chance of wining each bet (playing Black, Red, Odd, or Even) shows about a 92% chance of winning after ten bets.

Regular doubling after a loss does not meet the 90% requirement.

There is a lot of room for other strategies as well.
