I can sizzle like bacon, I am made with an egg,
I have plenty of backbone, but lack a good leg,
I peel layers like onions, but still remain whole,
I can be long, like a flagpole, yet fit in a hole,

What am I?

I think it's a fish!

I am made with an egg, (hatched from eggs)
I have plenty of backbone (lots of bones)
 but lack a good leg, (no legs
I peel layers like onions, (scales)
but still remain whole, (scales are scales)
I can be long, like a flagpole, (like those eels)
 yet fit in a hole,
