If a 7-11 store is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, then why are there locks on the doors?

The stores were designed that way back in the days when they actually opened at 7am and closed at 11pm? I wonder how many hours have been taken up with this question at board meetings? Or, how much has been spent over the years to replace lost keys?
