Water Works (Posted on 2002-11-02) Difficulty: 2 of 5
You have a 5 gallon jug and a 3 gallon jug. You have no other measuring devices.

Measure out exactly 4 gallons of water (Assume you have a river handy, or some other limitless water supply).

  • fill up the 5 gallon and pour it into the 3 gallon
  • dump out 3 gallon and pour whats left of the 5 gallons into the 3 gallon jug
  • fill up the 5 gallon jug again and fill up the rest of the 3 gallon jug so you are left with 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug
