Thirsty Farmer (Posted on 2003-07-09) Difficulty: 3 of 5
A farmer needs 8 gallons of water. He has only three unmarked buckets, two 6 gallon and one 11 gallon bucket.

How can he collect 8 gallons of water using three unmarked buckets? Provide solution with minimal water wastage.

the REAL answer with a loss of only 6 gallons of water | Comment 18 of 21 |

okay im sry if someone else has this up i didnt check all of them to see

okay this is what i got

1st you fill the 11 gallon bucket and pour it into one of the 6 gallon buckets,...that leaves 4 gallons of water in the 11 gallon bucket,..poer that water into the other 6 gallon bucket.

2nd, pour the full 6 gallon bucket back into the 11 gallon bucket so that you dont waste that water and fill that bucket back up.

3rd our the water out of the 11 gallon bucket into the empty 6 gallon bucket that again leaves you with 4 gallons of water in the 11 gallon bucket.

4th pour the 4 gallons of water out of the 6 gallon bucket into the 11 gallon bucket and there ya go you only wasted 6 gallons of water.

Hey you never said we couldnt reuse the water we already had out to make the rest of the 8 gallons and if he was getting it out of a well then he could simply pour the water back in it and not waste any water.
