Center Digits (Posted on 2004-11-28) Difficulty: 3 of 5
A four digit number is squared to form an eight digit number. The center four digits of that square form the four digit number. Find all possible four digit numbers.

(If 'abcd' was the four digit number, then the eight digit number would look like 'wxabcdyz'.)

I found the 2 culprits! 3792 and 7600. I also used Excel and programmed the formulas in about 4-5 minutes to find them. I searched for a solution other than this brute force method, but was hit with a spoke in the wheels. If there is one, I'd like to see it!
