Odd Sequence (Posted on 2004-12-17) Difficulty: 4 of 5
Below are 2 different sequences, but the rules are the same,

2, 3, 3, 9, 9, ?

3, 7, 3, 3, 7, 9, ?

determine the two missing numbers and find the rule,

Bonus. how far can each sequence go? Can you find a longer sequence of numbers that follow the same rule?

Solution All three parts | Comment 3 of 6 |

The first sequence missing number is 3.
The second sequence missing number is 9.

The first sequence cannot be extended any further.
The second sequence can be extended to length 8: 37337999

Assuming that the first number has to be a single digit, the longest sequence that I could find was 8. I found three of those, including the first. The other two are: 59393339 and 73939133.

Anyone else want to tackle the problem if we don't have to have a single digit to start?
